Description

About Leather Balm

The Colour Renew Balm will renew, revive and restore the colour and characteristics of all absorbent leather items both old and new. There are 16 colours formulated for use on leather, from a dark to light shade.

It works great for restoring the colour back to any leather item which may have suffered from colour fading due to exposure to sunlight or direct heat; it also works to help repair minor damage such as peeling, cracking, scuffed surfaces and cat scratches. It works great on dried out leather too. The Colour Renew Balm dye works by soaking into the leather, keeping the surface soft, supple, and durable, and will not rub off onto your clothes. The Colour Renew Balm is made from leather conditioner with added colour restorer, which makes it an excellent leather restoration cream.

Simply reinstates the colour with only one application! Additional applications can be applied during the refurbishment in order to reach your desired colour. With use, the leather will fade again but this can be reduced by using our Luxgrove Leather Repair Salve. The Leather Recolouring Balm is generally re-applied once every three years.

Restored Cushions

These chair seat cushions have been restored with the Dark Brown Renew Balm and show the difference with one coat (middle cushion), two coats (right cushion) and the original (left cushion)

NOTE: To fix scuffs and scratches, the Colour Renew Balm will only work if the scratch has gone to a lighter colour than the leather. This will allow the Balm to soak into the scuff or scratch, blending the damage in. If the scuff or scratch is darker than the surrounding area, you will need a Complete Leather Repair Kit. You can still use the Recolouring Balm in order to restore the colour to the rest of your item.

NOTE: For lighter patches, the Colour Renew Balm will only work if it is able to soak into your leather – to test this, put a tiny drop of water onto the damaged area and see if it soaks in within five seconds. If the leather is absorbent, the water will soak in and darken the leather. If the leather isn’t absorbent the water will bead up on the surface, and you will need a Leather Prep & Deglazer.

The Colour Renew Balm should only be applied to the lighter, absorbent areas of the leather to help blend them with the surrounding surface. If used on an undamaged area, the Balm will merely sit on the surface, drying without proper absorption, and will wipe away upon contact with water.

Leather Balm Instructions

These easy-to-follow instructions will show you how it's possible to completely restore leather using our Leather Balm.

Clean first before applying Leather Balm

Clean the leather first before applying the Balm.

Applying the Leather Balm

Rub the Leather Balm into the leather in a circular motion to ensure penetration. This is enough to completely restore the colour. Leave the Balm to soak into the leather for 10 minutes, then take a clean cloth and buff the surface of the leather. Make sure there is no excess Balm left on the leather.

Maintenance after applying Leather balm

After buffing, the leather becomes 100% colourfast. For thorough protection and longevity of your leather, we recommend applying the Luxgrove Leather Repair Salve; this will help to reduce future fading.

Instructions

How Do I Use It?

Step 2 in our 4-step process is using our leather prep and deglazing solution.

You are only required to use this solution if your leather is non-absorbent. If your leather is absorbent, you're in the clear to skip to leather recoloring balm application.

Is My Leather Absorbent?

Is Your Leather Absorbent? (Check Before Using Luxgrove Leather Recolouring Balm)

Before applying Luxgrove Leather Recolouring Balm, it’s important to make sure your leather is absorbent. Here’s how to check:

1. Place a few drops of water on an undamaged area of the leather.

2. If the water soaks in and the leather darkens — perfect. That means your leather is absorbent and ready for recolouring. The original factory finish has either worn off or was never applied.

3. If the water beads up or just sits on the surface, your leather is **non-absorbent**.

No worries — this is totally normal. It simply means the manufacturer's protective finish is still present.

To prep non-absorbent leather, use Luxgrove’s Leather Preparer & Deglazer to strip the finish and allow the balm to properly absorb and bond.

Taking this step ensures smooth, even results that last.

The 4-Step Process

Luxgrove’s 4-Step Leather Restoration System

A proven, no-fuss method for reviving tired leather. Developed with insight from thousands of customers and leather experts, this process is designed to give you lasting, beautiful results. Follow each step carefully to avoid patchy or uneven color.

STEP 1 – CLEAN THE SURFACE

Start by cleaning your leather with soap and a soft cloth. This lifts dirt and grime from deep within the pores, creating the ideal surface for recoloring.

STEP 2 – TEST ABSORBENCY

Rub a small amount of water on the leather. If it beads up or doesn’t soak in, you’ll need to use Luxgrove’s Leather Preparer & Deglazer to remove the factory finish. This step is crucial for proper balm absorption.

STEP 3 – APPLY COLOUR RENEW BALM

Using the included sponge, massage a small amount of Luxgrove Leather Recolouring Balm into the leather in circular motions. Let it fully cure for 24–36 hours before adding more. (Once cured, the balm cannot be layered.)

STEP 4 – SEAL & CONDITION

Finish by applying Luxgrove’s Leather Repair Salve. This seals in the color, prevents rub-off, and keeps your leather soft and supple for years to come.

Frequently Asked Question

Will this rub off or stain my clothes?

Not if you apply it correctly. Once it cures, the balm forms a strong bond with the leather. It won’t bleed, smear, or transfer onto clothing.

How long does it take to fully set?

While the balm starts absorbing immediately, it takes 24 to 36 hours to completely cure. Once that window’s passed, we recommend applying Luxgrove Leather Conditioner to lock in the colour and finish.

Can I blend different colours together?

Definitely. Our balms are made to be mixable, so you can customise the shade exactly how you want it. If you’re unsure where to start, reach out — we’re happy to help with colour matching tips.

Can I use this to completely change the colour of my leather?

Yes — you can shift from light to dark, or even dark to light. Just keep in mind: bold colour changes may need a few coats for full, even coverage.

Is it safe to use indoors?

Yes. Our formula is free from harsh solvents and contains no flammable or corrosive ingredients. It’s safe to use at home, even in enclosed spaces.

What if I pick the wrong colour?

No worries. You can send it back, swap it for a different shade, or combine it with another balm to adjust the tone. Our support team will sort you out — just get in touch.

How many coats should I apply?

It depends on your leather and the look you’re after. Minor touch-ups usually need just one layer. Bigger colour changes or worn-down leather may need two or three. Wait about 5 minutes between coats, and give the surface a quick buff each time to smooth things out.
